Jesus Made Some Really Bad Choices

Imagine if you had the rare opportunity to round up a team of athletes from around the globe to square off in a best-of-the-best competition. Who would you pick? If this decision was left up to me, well, my all-star squad would be stacked with beast-mode contenders such as LeBron James, Serena Williams, Tom Brady, Usain Bolt, and just for fun, I’d throw in Michael Phelps to handle any water related challenge. If it was a singing battle, then give me some Kelly Clarkson, Tori Kelly, Stevie Wonder, and the queen of gospel, Yolanda Adams.

The fact is that you and I would not hesitate to reach for the best there is to get a win. Doesn’t that seem like the smart choice — and I believe most would agree — the only choice. I mean, who would dare to invite little Billy from the local YMCA’s flag football league to grapple competitively with the greats? No one in their right mind would go after the least likely candidates to represent their team, unless your original goal was to gain airtime on YouTube’s greatest fails and fool’s compilations.

Of course, we all understand that I fabricated this entire scenario to make a point. My intention is to pull you back 2000 plus years in order to examine a wonderous, historical moment. If you did not know, Jesus, as a Rabbi, had to fulfill His Rabbinic duties and recruit, by His own initiative, the best possible people that…
